Garacharma, May 25: A major accident looms on the road connecting Garacharma Junction to AttamPahad as the condition of the route has deteriorated to a dangerous extent. Once a popular shortcut for commuters looking to avoid the traffic of Bhatu Basti to reach Dollygunj Junction, it is now being actively avoided due to its deplorable state.
The main reason behind this unfortunate situation is the constant operation of heavy trucks, specifically tippers. The continuous plying of heavy vehicles has caused severe damage to the road, making it nearly impossible for four-wheelers to traverse without incurring damages.
Adding to the perilous situation are the countless potholes, varying in size from small to large, that dot the region. These potholes have worsened due to the heavy truck traffic, creating a hazardous environment for all motorists. Sections of the road have been completely rendered unsafe for driving, exacerbating the already dire condition.
Adding to the plight, illegal parking on the road by people has made things too difficult for commuters.
Unfortunately, neither the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC), the Public Works Department (PWD), nor any other government agency has shown interest in addressing this matter. Residents residing in the areas are now demanding the intervention of the Chief Secretary to conduct an inspection and witness firsthand the deplorable state of the road. They seek answers as to why this vital route has remained neglected for several years, awaiting a catastrophic accident before any action is taken.
Mr. Rajesh Pal Govind, the councillor of Ward number 18, expressed his concern about the situation. “The road falls under the jurisdiction of the APWD, and as per the information received, the estimated funds have already been allocated, and the tender process is currently underway,” he stated. He further highlighted the urgent need for the APWD to examine the soil quality along the road. Due to the presence of soft soil in various areas, the road has become uneven, necessitating the filling of earth to enhance its strength.
