Mayabunder, Aug 12: Last year Administration had increased seats in many sections of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajakeeya Mahavidyala (JNRM) and this year the Administration has also approved opening of second shift in JNRM. But for Mahatma Gandhi Government College of Mayabunder no such steps were taken by the Administration, knowing fully well that hundreds of students of North and Middle Andaman do not get admission in MGGC every year, due to shortage of seats.
According to details available here this year 599 students had applied for admission in MGGC but only 262 out 599 candidates got admission in MGGC while rest 337 students could not be accommodated due to shortage of seats.
“When the Administration can increase the seats of JNRM, why the Administration can’t increase the seats in MGGC for our children? Why can’t they open second shift in MGGC as well? Why this step-motherly attitude?” questioned an angry parent of Mayabunder.
As per report still 4 seats, reserved for handicapped students and 16 seats, reserved for Schedule Tribe Students, are vacant in MGGC, which means 20 out of these 337 students will get admission by end of this month but what would be the fate of rest 317 children.
The problems of students of N & M do not end here as students of Port Blair and Campbell Bay also get admission in MGGC and they get priority in Hostel, students of Billyground and Betapur do not get hostel and they have to travel everyday to college in Bus, which means nearly 4-5 hours a day they waste in traveling. “They neither have enough seats for our children in the college nor in MGGC hostel,” another angry parent complained.
Another major problem is that since last two years the college is functioning without a full-time principal and hence for every single need students have to look for the Deputy Commissioner of N & M Andaman, who is the principal incharge of the college.
“The DC has many other important works than sitting in MGGC as principal. Naturally he can’t give enough time to our children. The college needs a full-time principal,” said an old resident of Mayabunder.
It seems that only JNRM and TGCE are getting all attention of Administration while the MGGC is getting only step motherly treatment from Administration. Perhaps because voice of public and students, living in N & M Andaman, does voice reach to the corridors of power.
