Port Blair, Mar 12: The Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) in collaboration with GIZ- India carried out a clean-up drive at Fish Landing Centre, Junglighat. Mrs. Smitha, IAS, Secretary ,PBMC lead from the front along with Mr.Jogga Rao, Ward Councillor in the clean up drive along with PBMC officials & Sanitary employees, Allu Arjun Army, Andaman Helping Hands and other volunteers.
During the drive around 42 bags (256.3 Kg) of waste was collected from the Fish Landing center. The waste consists of mixed garbage like plastics materials, Alcoholic bottles, Juice bottles, Water bottles etc.
Mr. Smitha R., Secretary, PBMC in her brief address emphasized the awareness to keep the neighborhood clean.Though the PBMC is creating frequent awareness the citizens has to play a major role in keeping the city spic and span. The Secretary also appealed to ensure waste segregation at Household level.The Secretary also highlighted that out of the 42 bags of waste collected today, 35 bags (92 Kg) is plastic waste which implies that collectively people need to be more responsible in usage and disposing the plastic products which eventually will deteriorate the fragile ecosystem of this serene Island
Mr.Joga Rao, Ward Councilor, 14 expressed thanks to all organizations including Fisheries Department, GIZ Officials, Sanitary Team of PBMC & Allu Arjun Army, who actively participated in the cleanliness drive and desired to hold more such drives in other parts of the city.
