Port Blair, Apr 30: A 49-year-old man named Mr. A. Mani was reportedly attacked and killed by a crocodile on the evening of 27, April while fishing alone near the creek area of Shoal Bay 08 number.
Mr. Mani, a resident of Shoal Bay (Silviculture) had left his house at around 3 PM on April 27th, informing his family that he would return at night. However, when he did not return the next day, his family and nearby people began to search the area.
During their search, they found only his dinghy and fishing equipments near the spot where he was last seen. The villagers registered a missing person’s case at the PS Bambooflat, and emergency services were called by the police following reports that the man had gone missing.
A search operation was launched immediately by a team consisting of forest officials, police, and villagers. Yesterday morning, the team found the lower portion of Mr. Mani’s body, with only his right leg, around 1 kilometer away from his dinghy. It is believed that he was attacked by a crocodile while he was fishing.
The incident has left the villagers in shock and mourning, and they are now demanding immediate compensation for the bereaved family. Mr. AR. Kumar Pradhan of Shoal Bay Gram Panchayat expressed his condolences and stated that crocodiles have been making their way into several water bodies in the area. He added that it was an unfortunate incident and the villagers are heartbroken by the tragic and untimely death of one of their own.
