Mayabunder, March 4 : Highlighting the critical shortage of specialist doctors at Dr. R.P. District Hospital, Mayabunder, former Pramukh of Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Siddique, has written to the Chief Secretary, Health Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, and Director of Health Services of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, urging immediate posting of specialists for the welfare of the people of North & Middle Andaman.
As per the letter, the recent memorandum dated 24th February 2025, issued by the Assistant Secretary (Health), has approved the appointment of 17 specialists on a contract basis with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, and the recommendations of the Selection Committee. The Lt. Governor has issued offer letters to these newly appointed specialists.
However, despite repeated requests, Dr. R.P. Hospital continues to face a severe shortage of specialists, leading to disruptions in healthcare services for the local population. Given its status as a key healthcare facility in the region, the absence of medical specialists poses a significant challenge for residents who rely on the hospital for critical care.
The letter specifically requests the immediate posting of one Surgical Specialist, one Anesthetist, one Gynecologist, and one Pediatrician at Dr. R.P. Hospital. It also raises concerns about the non-functional state of the Operation Theatre (OT) and urges authorities to verify its current status. If necessary, urgent repairs or upgrades should be undertaken to ensure its full functionality.
This appeal has been made on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing the prolonged struggles of the people of North & Middle Andaman due to inadequate healthcare services. Mr. Abdul Siddique has urged the administration to prioritize the matter and take swift action to ensure uninterrupted medical services for the community.
