May 18, 2025 by Sanjib Kumar Roy Leave a Comment

Mayabunder, May 18: A tragic incident struck the peaceful fishing community of Mayabunder on the evening of May 16, 2025, when a young fisherman lost his life after being struck by lightning while at sea.

According to reliable sources in Mayabunder, four fishermen had ventured into the Mayabunder sea aboard a motorized dinghy to catch fish using nets. As evening approached, they decided to return home. One of the fishermen, identified as Mr. Dharma Rao, S/o Mr. Krishna Rao, a youth aged between 18 to 20 years, was on the front portion of the dingy. When they were about to return, lightning struck near the boat, causing Mr. Dharma Rao to fall overboard.

The sudden flash of lightning reportedly left the other three fishermen momentarily stunned and disoriented, experiencing temporary vision impairment and shock waves. Once they regained their senses, they frantically searched for Mr. Dharma but were unable to locate him. The group then returned to shore and immediately informed both their local fishing colony and the nearby police station.

Search operations were launched the same night but yielded no results. On May 17, efforts continued with assistance from villagers, forest department officials, and the local police, yet Mr. Dharma remained missing.

Finally, during a search operation today (May 18), residents spotted a body floating in the sea. Upon closer inspection, it was confirmed to be that of Mr Dharma. His body was recovered and sent for postmortem. The final rites were performed the same day by grieving family members and the community.
