Sri Vijaya Puram, Jun 12: Mr. Abdul Siddique, Ex-Pramukh of Mayabunder, has raised serious concerns regarding the continued poor mobile and internet connectivity in parts of Mayabunder, including critical areas such as the District Hospital and remote villages like Karmatang IX and X.
In a meeting held today with Mr. G. Kumreshan, General Manager of BSNL, A&N Islands, Mr. Siddique highlighted the plight of residents who are left struggling with unreliable services despite regularly paying for monthly data plans. According to him, mobile and internet signals are either extremely weak or non-existent in several pockets of the region, making basic communication a daily challenge.
“Patients admitted at Dr. R.P. Hospital in Mayabunder often remain completely cut off from their families during emergencies due to the lack of mobile network inside the hospital,” said Mr. Siddique. “Government employees posted in Mayabunder without their families are also unable to maintain regular contact with their loved ones.”
Mr. Siddique pointed out that the issue has persisted for several months, affecting residents in areas such as Karmatang IX and X, Ward No. 04 at Pokadera, Danapur, and Gadda Basti. These localities, located around 10–15 kilometres from Mayabunder, frequently suffer from disrupted services, leaving people helpless in times of urgent need — from calling an ambulance or police to accessing online banking.
Despite raising the issue multiple times with BSNL officials in Port Blair and locally since September 2024, Mr. Siddique alleged that only verbal assurances have been offered, with no visible improvement. “They keep saying the issue will be resolved in one or two months and that the necessary equipment has arrived. But the ground reality hasn’t changed,” he added.
Stating that people from these affected regions have repeatedly approached him for help, Mr. Siddique formally urged the BSNL General Manager to intervene and ensure speedy restoration of proper mobile and internet services. “Connectivity is no longer a luxury — it is a necessity for emergency response, education, business, and maintaining family ties,” he stressed.
