Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 4:April 5th marks National Maritime Day in India. It was on this day in 1919 that a landmark event in Indian navigation history occurred—‘SS Loyalty’, the first ship owned by M/s Scindia Steam Navigation Company, sailed from Bombay to London, establishing India’s entry into the international maritime arena. The first celebration of National Maritime Day was held on 5thApril, 1964.
This year, the 62nd National Maritime Day will be observed across the nation, including in these Islands tomorrow (April 5). The theme for this year’s celebration is: “SAMRIDDH SAGAR – VIKSIT BHARAT YEVAM NEEL ARTH AUR HARIT VIKAS KE LIYE YUVA”, highlighting the role of youth in the development of a prosperous maritime sector, blue economy, and green growth in India.
To commemorate the 62nd National Maritime Day, various programmes/events have been arranged. Accordingly, the Wreath laying ceremony at Capt. Beals Grave will be held at 0630 hrs. This will be followed by assembly at Choulanga Jetty, Marine Dockyard, DSS at 0710 hrs; Flag Hoisting at Choulanga Jetty, DSS at 0715 hrs; Tree planting at Marine Dockyard, DSS at 0720 hrs and Tug of war between the staff of Afloat and Dockyard section of DSS at 0730 Hrs
In addition to the above, recognition of extraordinary services rendered by Marine organizations/individuals, are some of the other important activities which are being organised during the 62nd National Maritime Day.
