A&N Police arrest 15 for violation of PAT regulation

Port Blair, Jan 10: In a major offensive against illegal poachers and delinquent fishermen, a police team of PS Ograbraj have apprehended 15 persons under PAT Regulation for intruding into Jarawa areas. The police team under the supervision of the DySP(MA), Mr.Vinit Kumar conducted an intensive search & patrolling of the long coast line area from Herbertabad to Hiren Tikri coveringJhaukona, Bada Balu, Lamba Balu, Bamboo Nallah & Hawa Bill Island on Jan 7.

During the operation, a commercial fishing Trawler was sighted along the shore near Bamboonallah. The Trawler tried to flee seeing the police boat in pursuit. After a long chase, the Trawler was finally intercepted and six persons, namely Appal Raju, 38,Subramaniam, 35, Apanna 26, R.Balamurugan, 23, M. Balamurugan, 34 and Thanga Kumar, 33, all residents of Junglighat were arrested and the fishing Trawler seized.

During further search, three mechanized fishing boats and one non-mechanized Oar boat were intercepted at Hiren Tikery,Badabaalu and Havabill Island and nine persons namely, Salil Roy, 41, R/o Kadamtala, Gourango Mazumder, 55, R/o Kadamtala,Merinal Baroi, 40, R/o Kadamtala, Somar Majhi, 26, R/o Herbertagbad, B. Kumar Raja, 31, R/o Herbertabad, K. Subramani,43, R/o Herbertabad, Narayan Biswas, 30, R/o Herbertabad, Kamlesh Mistry, 21, R/o Wandoor and Niranjan Tarabdhar, 40, R/oWandoor were arrested for violating the Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation, 1956 by entering into the Jarawa Reserve Forest Area.

The police team involved in this task comprised of SHO Sahil Shamsuddin, ASI Shiva Kumar, HCs Vipin George, RatanKumar, Matin Tigga, PCs Rajdhari Yadav, Ram Raj, HG Mohd Rafique and others.

Meanwhile, the general public and fishermen have been cautioned not to venture into the Jarawa Reserve Forest Area which stretches up to 5 km on sea from the High Tide Line of Western Coast of Middle Andaman Area as it is a punishable offence under PAT Regulation, 1956, a communication from the SP (D) said here today.
