Boot Camp Celebrates Biodiversity of Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 15: To celebrate the biodiversity of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Wandoor, today INTACH Andaman and Nicobar Chapter in collaboration with Dakshin Foundation and ANET and with support from Forest Department organized a boot camp for around 60 children from different villages of Wandoor panchayat.
The children were taken to Marine Interpretation Centre, Wandoor where, Mr. Mohammed Hussain, Camp officer, Scuba Diving and Reef Monitoring Unit, Research and Survey Range beautifully explained several issues like Man-Animal Conflict between Crocodiles and Humans, Rescue Efforts by the Forest Department, Tagging of Turtles for Documentation and Statistics, Tagging of Cobras, the essence of Coral Reefs and the significance that little children can play in conserving the flora and fauna in the Wandoor area. The children were mesmerized to know that turtles come all the way from Madagascar to lay eggs in the National park. He also explained about the three flagship species that the National Park beholds, The Corals, Turtles, and The Dugong, our State Animal.
Ms. Agnesia Dung Dung, a botanist by academics and a Programme Assistant with Dakshin Foundation, brought the session alive with her vibrant seminar on the mangroves ecosystem of the islands, and explained in very simple words, about the littoral forests as well as species from the mangrove areas.
Mr. Arun Singh, Founding member of Andaman Avians Club, who was a special invitee, showed a presentation on endemic and migratory birds of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and gave nuggets of amazing information on sightings of rare species of birds. His ppt began with the slide of our State Bird. He mentioned sightings of birds from China and how these sightings are a rare phenomenon given cyclonic weather. Mr. Singh also quizzed the children on locations where they must have spotted common birds in the National park area like Beach Thick Knee and Egrets. He explained the difference between different Egrets as well as Serpent Eagles which are so common in the islands.
Mr. Irfan Ali, Programme Associate, Dakshin Foundation, took the children on a tour of the Interpretation centre and spent a lot of time to explain about each turtle species that inhabit the park. The children were pretty amazed to know that Crocodiles and Turtles are since the age of dinosaurs.
The camp ended with a gift of books called the Treasure Islands from INTACH A and N Chapter.
The camp was coordinated by Ms. Samhita Veda Acharya, Convenor, INTACH A & N Chapter with support from INTACH volunteers Ebi Mathew and Sajit Jaina and Mrs. Madhuri Mondal, Senior Programme Officer, Dakshin Foundation.

Their bravery inspires every Indian to uphold the values of unity, freedom, and patriotism that define our nation.
I call upon all residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to join hands with the rest of the country in commemorating this significant day. Let us unite in reflecting on the profound sacrifices of our armed forces and embrace the spirit of nationalism and pride they embody.
On this Vijay Diwas, let us renew our pledge to serve our nation with dedication and honor the ideals for which our brave soldiers fought.

“MV North Passage Sailing to Rangat Cancelled Due to Adverse Weather Conditions”

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 15:The passengers/general public have been informed that due to prevailing adverse weather conditions and strong winds, the sailing programme of MV North Passage to Rangat via Swaraj Deep & Long Island on Dec. 16 at 0600 hrs from Phoenix Bay Jetty and her return voyage from Rangat to Sri Vijaya Puram via same route at 1200 hrs has been cancelled. Passengers those who have purchased their tickets for the above sailings have been advised to cancel their tickets and get full refund.

“Adverse Weather May Disrupt Inter-Island and Ferry Services, Passengers Advised to Plan Accordingly”

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 15:All commuters, general public, and tourists have been informed that due to prevailing adverse weather conditions and strong winds, the operation of vessels is becoming increasingly difficult and unsafe. In view of passenger and vessel safety, the Directorate of Shipping Services may be compelled to suspend or cancel Inter-Island and Foreshore Sector vessel services at short notice.
Similarly, operations of Harbour/Vehicle Ferry Services between Chatham, Bambooflat, Dundas Point, Hopetown, Phoenix Bay, and other outstations may also face disruptions or suspensions based on weather conditions. In case of poor weather, services between Phoenix Bay to Hopetown and Bambooflat may be diverted and operated from Chatham Jetty.

Awareness Programme for Girl Students Held Under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ Scheme

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 15: Under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme, an awareness programme was conducted yesterday at Police Station, Diglipur for the girl students of Govt. Senior Secondary School, Diglipur. The initiative aimed to educate and empower young girls by providing them with essential information about the Police Department and its functioning.
During the programme, Mr. Vijay Kumar, SHO of Police Station, Diglipur delivered an insightful talk on the various services provided by the Police Department. Mrs. Kannagi, Sub-Inspector of Police of PS, Diglipur spoke on critical topics including various laws, crime prevention and the POCSO Act, to raise awareness about legal protections and support systems available to them.
As a part of the event, the students were taken on a guided tour of the Police Station where they were introduced to the purpose and functions of different sections within the Stations. Mrs. Indira Devi, Child Dev. Project Officer Diglipur also addressed the children emphasizing the significance of the Police Department in reducing crime rates and maintaining law and order.

Workshop on Ayushman Bharat – PMJAY for Senior Citizens Conducts in SA

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 15: A workshop on the ‘Ayushman Bharat –PMJAY for people aged 70 years and above’ was organized by the State Health Agency (Implementing agency of AB-PMJAY), A & N Islands for all the Common Service Centre (CSC) owners of South Andaman today in the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Health Services, Sri Vijaya Puram.
This extended policy ensures a cashless treatment worth Rs 5 lakh to all the 70+ senior citizens, with an only eligibility criterion, that the individual must be aged 70 years and above, as determined by the age recorded in their Aadhaar Card, regardless of economic status. The elderly people enrolled under the scheme will be provided Ayushman Vay Vandana Card.
Dr. P. Lal, the Nodal Officer for AB-PMJAY, provided an overview of the card creation process for individuals aged 70 and above, outlined the eligibility criteria and also discussed key aspects of the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme. The workshop aimed to educate the CSC owners about the extended policy of Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme that has included all the senior citizens aged 70 years and above across the country into the scheme.
Further, the senior citizens aged 70 years and above may enroll under the PMJAY scheme by visiting the official website – pmjay.gov.in themselves or may approach the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) to create their ‘Ayushman Vay Vandana Card’.

Training on Safety Aspects of Inland Vessels Conducts for TSET Team

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 15: Training on safety aspects of inland vessels for the TSET team was organized by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman today at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Auditorium, SVPMC. The workshop was attended by the Team Leader, TSET with Tourist Safety Enforcement Team (TSET) viz. Aberdeen Jetty [RGWSC], North Bay, Corbyn’s Cove, Wandoor, Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and representatives from various Departments such as Health, IP&T, Port Management Board, Fire, Disaster Management, DC Office and Police Marine Force gave presentations on various safety aspects and Rules to be adhered to by the TSET team.
The training on safety aspects of Inland vessels to the TSET team stressed on the importance of safety measures of both vessels and passengers. The TSET team was advised to strictly adhere to all norms and regulations and also mentioned that the boat should not be overcrowded and should strictly adhere to the specified capacity of the vessel and maintain the timing of the vessel. Further stated that safety equipment should be mandatorily kept in all vessels and passengers should be strictly advised to wear safety jackets which are for their safety. The training advocate should know how to give CPR in case of any emergency.
The officials of the Port Management Board highlighted the need to follow all safety precautions without any laxity and urged the TSET team to adhere to the timing specified.
The doctors of the Directorate of Health Services highlighted life saving procedures and presented live demonstrations of CPR and water expulsion procedures. The presentation by PMB dwelt on various IV Rules and general IV Rules and general procedure on boat safety. Stress was given on plying the boat without overcrowding and within allowed time. Availability of life saving equipment was also stressed upon by PMB. The presentation by IP&T stressed on adhering to passenger carrying capacity and attending to grievances of tourists properly. The Department also emphasizes having emergency contact numbers readily available with the TSET team.
The presentation of Disaster Management underlined various risk factors especially the weather warnings and other warnings issued from state and District Disaster Management Centres. It was also emphasized upon to use contacts of DSS, PMF, Coast Guard, SEOC etc. during emergencies. The presentation by the Police Marine Force dwelt on the importance of taking into account wind, weather and currents and the importance of the Master and his competence. Equipment like life jackets, life buoy etc. were explained in detail.
The Fire Services demonstrated the live operation of water based, Foam based and CO2 based fire extinguishers. They also stressed on not allowing smoking on board and not to carry extra fuel on board from a safety perspective.
Mr. Abhishek Gulia, Assistant Commissioner (HQ) while proposing the vote of thanks, thanked everyone for their active and enthusiastic participation. He reminded the TSET team of their responsibilities towards the safety aspects of Inland vessels to the TSET team and urged them to strictly follow the safety measures and not to compromise with it.

MV Sentinel to Sail for Nancowry on December 19

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 15: The vessel MV Sentinel is scheduled to sail for Nancowry via Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Chowra, Teressa & Katchal on 19.12.2024 at 0700 Hrs from Haddo Wharf and will sail back to Sri Vijaya Puram on 22.12.2024 at 0500 Hrs from Nancowry via the same route.
Passenger tickets for the above sailing will be issued to the general public from 16.12.2024 (Monday) onwards. Passengers may book their tickets from DSS e-ticketing portal (https://dss.andaman.gov.in/eticketing) and from STARS Ticketing Counter between 09.00 AM to 04.00 PM.

“Boat Operations Shifted to Junglighat Jetty Following Weather Damage at RGWSC Pontoon”

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 15: The Ladder of the Pontoon & Jetty at RGWSC has been damaged to a considerable extent following inclement weather, making it unsafe for plying of boats to mobilise the tourists from RGWSC to nearby Islands of NSCB & North Bay. In this regard, to ensure the safety of tourists, all the inland vessels will be operated from Junglighat Jetty w.e.f Dec. 16, 2024 instead of RGWSC till the restoration work of Jetty is completed.

“Consumers Advised to Ensure Compliance with VAT Regulations in A&N Islands”

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 15: Upon Promulgation of Andaman and Nicobar Value Added Tax Regulation, 2017, and Value Added Tax Rules, 2020, the following goods fall under the purview of Value Added Tax in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
• Petroleum Products: Petroleum Crude, high Speed Diesel, High Speed Diesel (Ship), Petrol, Natural Gas, Aviation Turbine Fuel.
• Alcoholic Beverages: Including Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), and Beer.
Dealers trading in these goods are strictly required to adhere to VAT Regulation, including issuance of proper tax invoices upon request by consumers as per Section 50 of the A&N VAT Regulation. Further, the dealers are required to maintain records as per Section 48(6) of the A&N VAT Regulation.
Consumers are advised to ensure that they receive tax invoices for every purchase of the aforementioned goods. These invoices must include:
• The word “Tax Invoice” prominently displayed.
• Details such as the names, addresses, and registration numbers of the selling registered dealer.
• The name and address of the purchaser and his registration number, where the purchaser is a registered dealer.
• A unique invoice number, date, description, quantity, and value of goods sold, along with applicable tax details.
This release is issued to raise awareness among consumers and ensure compliance with VAT Regulations.
