Severe Weather Warnings Issued for Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Port Blair, May 20: The Directorate of Disaster Management has issued a series of weather warnings for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, effective from May 20th to May 26th, 2024. Residents and visitors are urged to take precautions as adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and squally seas, are forecasted.
Weather Forecast
Monday, May 20 (Day 1):
• Thunderstorm with Lightning: Expected in one or two places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
• Heavy Rainfall: Anticipated in one or two places, with rainfall measuring 7-11 cm in the Nicobar Islands.
Tuesday, May 21 (Day 2):
• Heavy Rainfall: Likely in one or two places in the Andaman Islands, with precipitation between 7-11 cm.
• Thunderstorm with Lightning: Forecasted for one or two places in the Nicobar Islands.
Wednesday, May 22 (Day 3) to Thursday, May 23 (Day 4):
• No specific weather warnings issued.
Friday, May 24 (Day 5):
• Heavy Rainfall: Expected in one or two places in the Andaman Islands, with rainfall between 7-11 cm.
Saturday, May 25 (Day 6) and Sunday, May 26 (Day 7):
• No significant weather events predicted.
Fisherman and Port Warnings
Monday, May 20 (Day 1):
• Squally Weather: Wind speeds between 40-50 kmph are expected along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coastlines. Sea conditions are forecasted to be rough to very rough, posing a high risk to maritime activities.
• Rough Sea Alert: High period (16-18 second) swell waves, with heights of 0.4 – 1.3 meters, are anticipated nearshore from 17:30 hours on May 19th to 23:30 hours on May 20th.
• Port Warning: All ports should prepare for squally weather with gusty winds from May 20th, 2024.
Advisory
Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into the sea during these conditions. The state emergency operation center can be reached at helpline numbers 1070 and 1077 for further inquiries and information. In case of emergencies at sea, contact the Coast Guard SAR Agency at their toll-free number 1554.
Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and heed any further advisories issued by the Directorate of Disaster Management.

Encroachment Eviction Drive by Revenue Official At Diglipur Sub Division

Port Blair, May 20: The District Administration, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Shri Dilkhush Meena, IAS, continues its relentless efforts in the ongoing encroachment eviction drive. Revenue officials are actively engaged in removing illegal encroachments from public and government lands across the district.

Eviction of freshly encroached Govt Revenue land at sitanagar village, Diglipur in the form of Arecanut/ Banana plantation and roadside tea stall at Naveen Nagar was carried out today and altogether an area of approx 11060sq.mtr have been restored by the team of RI, Patwari and revenue field staffs of Diglipur tehsil.
Similar exercises will be held regularly in the district to prevent any encroachment on Govt. land.

Successful Multi-Specialty Health Camp Conducted at Shaheed Dweep

Port Blair, May 20: A highly beneficial multi-specialty health camp was conducted on the 19th of May, 2024, at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Shaheed Dweep. This significant health initiative was a collaboration between the NGO WITH YOU, the Directorate of Health Services, and Dr. Ritika’s Diagnostic Center. The Gram Panchayat of Shaheed Dweep also extended its full support to ensure the camp’s success.

The camp was inaugurated by Smti. M. Rajini, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, who was the Chief Guest at the event. Shri Sharfuddin, Up Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, served as the Guest of Honour. Other distinguished guests included Smti Champa Das, Pramukh of Panchayat Samity,Port Blair , Smti Pinky Das, Pradhan of Shaheed Dweep and members of NGO. In her opening remarks, Smti. Rajini expressed her pleasure at the turnout of six specialist doctors of various disciplines and encouraged the continuation of such camps to serve the rural communities of South Andaman.

The President of WITH YOU highlighted the NGO’s commitment to providing humanitarian services and confirmed the organization’s plan to host future health camps in rural areas. Dr. Bajpayee, Chief Medical Officer at PHC Shaheed Dweep, welcomed the attendees and assured full support and coordination throughout the event.

Specialists who offered their services included Dr. Maneel Patel (Radiologist), Dr. Supria Roy (General Physician), Dr. Prithviraj Patil (Orthopedic Surgeon), Dr. (Major) Sameer Samuel (ENT Specialist), Dr. Juhee Yadav (Gynecologist), and Dr. Rajbarath (General Medicine). The camp facilitated on-the-spot ultrasounds and served nearly 100 individuals, including pregnant women and the elderly.

Adding to the health camp’s activities, 20 student trainees from GD Goenka Health Academy performed a ‘Nukkad Naatak’ (street play) on breast cancer awareness at the Panchayat community hall. Furthermore, a poster-making competition on the same topic was held, with prizes awarded to the winners, enhancing community engagement and education.

The camp was not only a platform for addressing immediate health needs but also an educational hub that significantly impacted the local community’s awareness and understanding of health issues. The collective efforts of all involved were greatly appreciated by the local residents and the members of the Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs).

10 Days Induction Training Programme

Port Blair, May 20: The State Institute of Education (SIE), Port Blair in collaboration with Regional Institute of Education, NCERT Bhubaneswar is conducting ‘10 Days Induction Training Programme for the newly recruited GTTs of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 20 to 30, 2024 at various venues in Port Blair.
The main objective of the programme is to develop the Capacity of newly recruited GTTs in content enrichment, academic activities and class room management. Altogether, 494 newly recruited GTTs and 50 resource persons from SIE, DIET Port Blair and RIE, Bhubaneswar are participating in the Induction Training Programme.
Prof. P.C. Agarwal, Principal, RIE, Bhubaneswar NCERT was the chief guest of the inaugural function. Smti Archana Singh, Principal, GSSS Girls, resource persons, Prof. S.R. Sahoo, Head Prof. English , DESSH, RIE ,BBSR, Dr. Saurabh Kapoor, Assistant Professor, Maths, DESM, RIE, BBSR, Dr. Nomita Pachar, Assistant Professor, Maths, DESM, RIE, BBSR, Dr. Sushant Singh, Assistant Professor, Physics DESM, RIE, BBSR and Dr. Bhawana Vaishnav, Assistant Professor, Geography, DESSH, RIE, BBSR were present on the occasion.
In his inaugural address, Prof. P.C. Agarwal, Principal, RIE, BBSR enlightened the participants that teaching is not a job or profession, it is actually a ‘Service to Mankind and Society’. Further, he highlighted that teachers should enhance social values and inculcate good habits in every child and be a role model for their students. He also elaborated on various themes of NEP 2020 and NCF 2023 and stressed on dedication for the importance of building competencies in learners and achieving holistic development rooted in Indian culture.
Earlier, the Principal, SIE, Shri R.K. Singh welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of induction training programme for the newly recruited GTTs and sought enthusiastic involvement from the participants. The inaugural function concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Shri Velchezian, Faculty, SIE.

DDK to prepare panel of Casual Anchors and Presenters

Port Blair, May 20: Doordarshan Kendra Port Blair will be conducting Screen test, Audition and Interview for preparation of panel of Casual Anchors and Presenters. Candidate should be graduate in any language with Hindi as one of the subject.
Resident of Port Blair Municipal area below the age of 30 yrs (as on 01.06.2024) will only be considered for empanelling as Casual Anchor & Presenter.
Application form can be collected from DDK Port Blair on any working day w.e.f 21.05.2024 during office hours. Filled in application form along with the required documents should reach Head of Programme Doordarshan Kendra Port Blair on or before 31st May 2024.
The duty of Casual Anchor & Presenter does not bestow any right for future regular employment. The panel is prepared for engaging them on ‘as when required basis’.

District Magistrate, South Andaman Issues Order under Section 144 for Compulsory Tenant Verification: Order under Section 144 Issued in the Interest of Overall Safety and Security of the Islanders

Port Blair, May 19: Keeping in view the increase in crime rate in the Islands and the apprehension that anti-social elements may make their hideouts clandestinely in the residential/commercial areas of the South Andaman District and also to check the unlawful activities of these people who can cause breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity besides posing grave danger to human life and safety and injury to public property the District Magistrate, South Andaman had issued orders U/s 144 of the Cr. P. C as an emergency measure.
To keep some check/vigil over such unscrupulous elements, it is necessary on landlords/owners/managers of the residential/commercial establishments that while renting out or sub-letting the premises shall rent out or sub-let any accommodation to any person, he/she has to furnish the particulars of the said tenants or Paying Guests to the local Police Station.
Also no landlord/owner/tenant/manager or the residential, commercial etc establishments shall employ any servant/househelp, unless and until he/she has furnished the particulars of the said servant(s) to the local Police Station. All the persons who intend to offer accommodation on rent or employ any servant/ househelp shall inform in writing the particulars of tenants, paying Guests & Servants to the Station Officers concerned in whose jurisdiction the premises fall. Any breach of this order would invite action Under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
The order has come into force with effect from zero hours on 18/05/2024 and shall be effective for a period of sixty days and is applicable to those also who already have domestic servants/maids and has not informed the Police yet when the order is in force.
This order has been issued by the District Administration, South Andaman so that anti-social elements in the guise of ordinary tenants, domestic servants & Paying Guest may not cause harm to the citizens and that immediate action is necessary for prevention of the same.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman sated that very strict view will be taken if anyone does not comply with the said 144 Cr. P. C. Order

Member of Parliament demands Permanent Solution to Prolonged Power Cuts in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Port Blair, May 19: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested a Permanent Solution to Prolonged Power Cuts in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the Member of Parliament mentioned that in almost every part of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, people are facing multiple power cuts lasting several hours, making daily life exceedingly difficult.

He added that the temperature in these islands has risen sharply in the months of March, April and May, exacerbating the discomfort caused by these power cuts, especially during the summer vacation period.

The Member of Parliament mentioned that due to power cuts, small business owners, who cannot afford generators or inverters, are finding it extremely challenging to maintain their operations under these circumstances.

Given the severity of this issue, he requested the Chief Secretary to urgently address this matter and find a permanent solution to the power crisis that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands face almost every year.

Successful Blood Donation Camp in Kanyapuram Model Village

Port Blair, May 19: A successful blood donation camp held today at Community Hall Model village under Gram Panchayat Kanyapuram. This camp was organised by Living on the Edge – LOTE, in Association with Blood Bank, GBPANT, Hospital, Port Blair and Andaman and Nicobar AIDS Control Society. All together 40 units of blood was collected by the team of ANACS. The maximum number of participants were from the Final, selected list of mazdoor under the DFO, Wimberlygunj, who are still waiting for their appointment orders.
The participants were appraised & motivated by the Mr. Ashwin Kumar, IFS, DFO, South Andaman, Mr. Abhay Kumar, President LOTE, Mr. P. Abdul Basheer, Pradhan, GP Kanyapuram & Dr. Ankita Banerjee, CMO, Dr.Ritika Hospital, Port Blair.
Dr.Shilpa, Medical Officer, Blood Bank, thanked the organizers and all donors who have participated in the blood donation camp.

PS Bambooflat Police Thwart Major Drug Operation and Arrests 03 Peddlers

Port Blair, May 19: Continuing to our commitment in eradicating illegal drug trade and keeping our community safe, the Police Station Bambooflat under South Andaman seized 150 grams of illicit Ganja and apprehend 03 persons.
On 17/05/2024, credible information was received that an individual named Harbaz Ali was in possession of illicit ganja and intended to sell it at a lucrative price near the Fish Market, Bambooflat. Upon receipt of this information, a team comprising Inspector Rizwan Hassan, SHO, PS Bambooflat, SI Manoj Lal, HC Zubair, PCs Shiva, Suresh Kumar, and Mubeena Banu was constituted. The team, augmented by two independent witnesses, proceeded to the location. Upon identifying the suspect, Harbaz Ali was intercepted, and during his personal check, a plastic pouch containing 40 grams of illicit ganja was found. The recovered illicit ganja was seized on the spot and the accused was arrested under NDPS Act.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he had purchased the illicit ganja from an individual named Abhinay, also known as Shan. Subsequently, the raiding team conducted raid at Abhinay’s residence in Prothrapur and recovered 60 grams & 50 grams of illicit ganja from the possession of Abhinav Howlader and Ruban Raj respectively. The recovered illicit ganja was seized on the spot after observing all codal formalities. A total of 150 grams of illicit ganja was seized during this operation, which was conducted under the direct supervision of DySP Vinay Mathur, SDPO Bambooflat and overall supervision of Mrs. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, SP District South Andaman.
The general public is requested to inform about any credible information pertaining to sale or possession of contrabands or any other illegal activity on the following telephone numbers- 100, 258411, 9434270033. The identity of the informer will be kept secret.
