Andaman Police launches hunt to trace Jarawa video source

January 12, 2012 by sanjib 1 Comment

Port Blair, Jan 11: Following media reports on alleged exploitation of Jarawa Tribes in Andaman and Nicobar Islands surrounding an old video of Jarawa Dance, the Andaman and Nicobar Police has launched a hunt to trace out the source of the Jarawa Video.
“We are trying to establish the source of the video. Every news channel is quoting Survival International, a London based NGO as sources but we are trying to find out how this video reached Survival International and who has shot the video. Once source is traced necessary action will be taken,” SBS Tyagi the Superintendent of Police of South Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
Meanwhile the Andaman and Nicobar Police has also expressed shock on how the issue is mis-reported by media as “Cops are forcing jarawa Tribes to dance” and “Cops took bribe from people for Jarawa Safari.”
“We also want to clarify that no policeman is involved in this, which is clearly visible in this video but still various news channels are showing that Policemen took bribe for Jarawa Tourism,” Tyagi added.
Meanwhile political parties are smelling rat in this complete issue. “This news is completely false there were no policeman in the video moreover the timing of releasing this old video to mainstream media raises many doubts. When in Andaman at present people are protesting to keep the Andaman Trunk Road open, this video was released by a group to put pressure on Government to close down the Andaman Trunk Road, the life line of Andaman,” Mr. R Mohan the President of Bharatiya Janta Party’s A & N State unit told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
The BJP has also demanded an inquiry to find out who had actually shot the video. Meanwhile the Director General of A & N Police today raised doubt over the functioning of Survival International and Search NGOs saying that Survival and Search International is an NGO that from time to time raises such issues.
“This is because they collect vast donations in the name of protecting the primitive tribes of the world. What work they actually do is a mystery. The Director Stiphen Cowry and others such employees of the NGO have taken it upon themselves to draw fat salaries and benefits from funds donated for primitive tribes. It is obvious that funds are low and have to be stimulated by such sensational lies,” the Director General of A & N Police Mr. SB Deol said here today.
Deol said that no where in the video clip is a policeman shown taking a bribe.
“The ‘Observer’’, London may be asked to apologise to the A & N Police and to disclose the name of the videographer so that legal action could be initiated against him for recording such a scene and worse still releasing it for further publicity to the media and thereby lowering the dignity of the members of the Jarawa Tribe. In the last 5 years, almost a thousand individuals have been arrested by the A & N Police for illegally interacting with the Jarawa Tribe.,” the DGP added.

Police Celebrates Road Safety Week but Top Officers’ vehicle break Traffic Rules

January 5, 2012 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Staff Reporter

Port Blair, Jan 04: Call it a simple mistake or highest level of hypocrisy, on one hand the Andaman and Nicobar Police is celebrating Road Safety Week and on the other hand two vehicles of top police officers today openly violated Road Safety Norms in city. It was found that police vehicles number D-0006 and D-0003, were today continuously ferrying family members and guests of police officers in Aberdeen Bazaar area.

These Vehicles were seen sometimes infront of garment shops and sometimes infront of tourists-gift shops middle point. Though this misuse of government vehicles will be obviously justified by officers, as it is always done, but the how Police Department will justify violation of road safety norms, that too during much hyped ‘Road Safety Week’.

Today at around 11.00 am, one of these vehicles was parked openly infront of Janta Cloth Store, Aberdeen Bazaar, blocking normal flow of traffic. Aberdeen Bazaar area is the busiest road of Port Blair city and parking of vehicles on the road is not permitted by the Police Department. Had this been a vehicle of common man the Police Jawans would have imposed heavy challan on the driver.

However, in this case, as it is seen is the photograph taken by Andaman Sheekha, a Traffic Jawan crossed the vehicle without even noticing it. Are traffic rules are different for General Public and Police Officers? Same kind of dangerous parking was seen infornt of Gift Shops of Middle Point (Opposite to State Library).

No doubt that Traffic Jawans and staffs of entire Traffic Unit have been doing wonderful job by slogging almost 24 hours a day but if such wrong examples are set by top officers how the traffic unit will manage the show and impose rules of common man?

Hopefully this time Police Department will set an example by imposing challan on these two vehicles and sending a press release regarding to tell people that how serious the department is towards road safety. About misuse of the vehicles by non-police people for shopping, people of A & N Islands expect no action as misuse of government vehicles for domestic works by officers has become a tradition in A & N Islands. In any case ‘Happy Road Safety Week’.

INDISCRIMINATE EARTH CUTTING CONTINUES IN SOUTH ANDAMAN

January 4, 2012 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Staff Correspondent

Port Blair, Jan 03: Earth cutting has become a one of the most profitable businesses in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, ever since the laws for quarry and crusher operation have been made strict by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration. After Sippighat one can easily find indiscriminate earth cutting atleast in dozens of areas in South Andaman. These loose earth are mostly used by private parties to fill the tsunami inundated land so that those land could be sold to people as house sites.

Earlier also several media organisations have raised questions over such indiscriminate earth cutting which has not only become an eyesore but also damaging the ecology. In most of the case one can find that private contractors are cutting green hillocks on which there is still plantation and in some cases, naturally grown trees. One wonders how private parties are getting green signal from Administration.

Moreover, careless earth cutting work is also disrupting normal traffic in ATR as loose earth makes the ATR stretch after Sippighat and Dhanikhari muddy and slippery, which may cause accident at any time.
