Port Blair, Mar 29: After a year of discontinuing the supply of free ration items to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) Great Andamanese living in Strait Island, the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Keshav Chandra, has brought some hopes to the tribal population. A good number of Great Andamanese people, who belong to the PVTG, reside in the Strait Island, Middle Andaman.
According to reports, earlier the Andaman and Nicobar Administration provided free ration items on a monthly basis, which included 7 kg of rice and atta, one liter of cooking oil, half kg of sugar etc per head for every individual of Great Andamanese via AAJVS.
However, last year, the AAJVS suddenly stopped providing ration items to the families of government servants and their dependent family members, causing severe hardship for the people. With the unavailability of ration items, they were compelled to rely on hunting animals for food. Rani Surmae, Chief of Great Andamanese people, told Andaman Sheekha Daily that they suffered a lot due to this decision.
Therefore, the Great Andamanese people living in Strait Island requested the Andaman administration and the Chief Secretary to intervene in the matter and provide continuous free ration items to all tribal people of Great Andamanese.
Upon being contacted, a senior officer of Tribal Welfare informed the Andaman Sheekha Daily that the Chief Secretary visited Strait Island two weeks back, where the tribal people highlighted the problem before him. Immediately, the Chief Secretary directed AAJVS to start necessary arrangements for providing ration items to all the Great Andamanese people, except government servants. Furthermore, the officer assured Andaman Sheekha that free ration items will be provided to the tribal population from next month onwards. This decision by the Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has brought a great deal of hope for the tribal people living in Strait Island.

Ayyappan urges CS to fill up all vacant posts of teachers on regular basis by following the reservation criteria
Port Blair, Mar 29: Mr. D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) Andaman and Nicobar State Organising Committee met the Chief Secretary, A & N Administration today (29.03.2023) at Secretariat and discussed with him various issues concerning the islanders. In a letter submitted to the Chief Secretary, he urged the Administration to stop the process of recruitment of teachers on contract basis against the vacant posts in the Education Department.
Referring to the two advertisements appeared in The Daily Telegrams recently inviting applications for filling up of certain number of posts, Mr. Ayyappan said that nearly 1000 posts of teachers are lying vacant and no effective step has been taken by the authorities to fill up these posts over the years.
Now, the Education Department has come up with the proposal for filling up some of these posts on contract basis.
Mr. Ayyappan urged the Chief Secretary to fill up all the vacant posts of teachers on regular basis by following the reservation criteria of ST, OBC, EWS, etc. CPI (M) is of the view that since the number of qualified local candidates for any posts of teachers in the Education Department will be in the manageable number, there may not be any difficulty for processing the offline applications and demanded that online application should be avoided in order to prevent candidates from mainland applying for the posts of teachers in these islands which will be of great relief to the qualified local candidates.
CPI (M) Secretary also discussed with the Chief Secretary the demands of (1) Desalination of sea water to tide over the drinking water scarcity (2) filling up of vacant posts of Principals and Vice Principals (3) Early implementation of High Court order on grant of 1/30th of pay plus DA to DRMs working under the Administration and (4) Delay in promotion to the posts of Assistant Secretaries and Office Superintendents. Chief Secretary gave a patient hearing and assured appropriate favourable action on the demands raised. CPI (M) Secretary also brought to the notice of the Chief Secretary the difficulties being faced by the people for conversion of land for dwelling purpose and by local entrepreneurs.
