Port Blair, May 30: Although people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are still waiting for heavy rainfall, the IMD today said that the much-awaited monsoon has finally arrived over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which will bring a sense of relief to the residents. After a delayed onset and an extended summer accompanied by heatwaves, the islands have experienced a dip in water reservoir levels, causing concerns over daily water needs in the cities.
As per IMD, recent rainfall has indicated a positive arrival of the monsoon in the region. “Today, on May 30, 2023, the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into several parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andaman Sea, and East central Bay of Bengal. The current position of the Northern Limit of Southwest Monsoon passes through 5°N/80°E, 6.5°N/83°E, 10°N/88°E, 14°N/92°E, and 17°N/95°E. Favorable conditions are anticipated for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into the Maldives & Comorin area, remaining parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Southeast Bay of Bengal, Central Bay of Bengal, and Northeast Bay of Bengal in the next 2-3 days,” experts from IMD told Andaman Sheekha today.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), clear monsoon rainfall has begun in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The current weather conditions are favorable, with light rainfall observed in some places. Long Islands received 55.8mm of rainfall, Mayabunder 05mm, Port Blair 11.7mm, Hut Bay remained dry, Car Nicobar 09.2mm, Nancowry Islands 0.8mm, and Nicobar 25.8mm.
The IMD predicts that light rainfall will continue in some parts of the islands tomorrow and today. Although not expected to be heavy, light rain is anticipated throughout this week, gradually increasing to moderate rainfall next week. The situation remains favorable, and the coming days are expected to bring relief to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with light rainfall.
The arrival of the monsoon brings hope for replenishing the water reservoirs and fulfilling the daily water requirements of the island’s residents. The local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to take necessary precautions while enjoying the cooler weather.
