Port Blair, July 31: As India celebrates Amrit Kal, staffs of Gram Panchayat Laxmipur, under Diglipur Tehsil, are forced to toil under a leaking roof due to the dilapidated condition of the Panchayat Bhavan. The situation took a turn for the worse as heavy rains lashed the Diglipur area for the past few days, leading to water seeping into the building.
The sorry state of affairs at the Panchayat Bhavan came to light when water continued to drip from the ceiling, indicating the precarious condition of the roof. The roof was in such a deteriorated state that it could collapse at any moment, posing a grave risk to the safety of those inside.
Mr. Sujan Das, the Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Laxmipur, expressed his frustration over the situation, stating that the Panchayat Bhavan is in a deplorable state and could aptly be called the ‘Leak Bhavan.’
He highlighted that with every rainfall, water inundates the lobby area, forming puddles on the floor. This is not an isolated incident, as similar occurrences have taken place in the past, including last year.
The renovation of the Panchayat Bhavan commenced two months ago, but to their dismay, the work remains incomplete. The Pradhan explained that during the renovation, the contractor and workers were diverted to other areas under the pretext of completing important tasks, leading to the delay in the restoration work.
Consequently, the villagers are now facing considerable inconvenience as they approach the Panchayat for their grievances and work, only to find the place in a state of disarray due to the persistent leakages.
Mr. Sujan Das stressed that they have made repeated appeals to the Administration to take necessary action, acknowledging that funds have been allocated for the renovation. However, the work is yet to be carried out, leaving the Panchayat Bhavan in an appalling condition.
It is imperative that the concerned authorities promptly address this critical issue and expedite the renovation process to ensure the safety and well-being of those who work at and visit the Gram Panchayat Laxmipur. The welfare of the villagers, as well as the smooth functioning of the Panchayat, relies on the timely resolution of this pressing matter.
Meanwhile the officials of Engineering wind of Rural Development Department were unreachable for any comment in this regard.

Diglipur Grapples with Erratic Power Supply: Public Left in the Dark
Rabindranath Biswas
Diglipur, July 31: The normal life of the people of Diglipur was severely paralysed with the erratic power supply for the last couple of days.
According to information, after every 1-2 hours, and at times without any time-frame, there was a power failure which put the people of Diglipur in real trouble. “Though the duration of the power outage varies, the power disruption has become a regular feature in Diglipur nowadays,” the incensed public said. Online services in Govt. Offices where there is no alternative means of power supply are also being severely impeded owing to this erratic power supply, govt. staffs manning the tasks, alleged.
Similarly, electrical/domestic appliances are also being badly affected by this irritant power failure, the general public alleged. And business owners too suffer due to voltage fluctuations and frequent power failures. Talking to Andaman Sheekha, general store owners and bakery owners in the town alleged that the goods they store in their refrigerators and deep freezers are always at a risk of perishing because of unexpected power outages.
However, when contacted to unearth the reasons of the alleged power failures in Diglipur region, the higher Officials of the Electricity Department, Diglipur told Andaman Sheekha Daily over phone that there were certain unavoidable hurdles which caused power failures in the last few days. A number of trees fell last night on the HT lines owing to gusty winds and which caused snapping of HT lines at multiple places in between Power House at Sitanagar and Kalpong Dam. Besides, the HT lines often get tripped due to the trees and plants touching the power lines. And repeated tripping and other related reasons cause flashes in the power control panels in the Power Houses which are reasons for disruption in the power supply, the Officials explained. The delay in attending the faults at electric lines is caused due to communication gap between the staffs at Power House at Sitanagar and Kalpong Dam; and this communication gap occurs due to BSNL’s service which gets disrupted owing to its backup problem in the event of power failure, the officials alleged.
Amid all this, when asked about when the power supply is going to be restored to normalcy, the Official told that the staffs of the Electricity Department worked on war footing last night mending the faults and it is expected that there will be uninterrupted power supply right from today, the Official further assured.
