Port Blair, August 02: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 40-year-old man named Mr. Mohan lost his life in a road accident this morning at around 08:55 AM. The accident occurred when a speeding car lost control and collided with him, resulting in the man’s untimely demise.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Mohan had left his house early in the morning to get his mini cargo van repaired and change its engine oil at Dollygunj Junction. After stopping his van on the side of the road, he walked to a nearby mechanic shop for the necessary repairs. While returning to his van and crossing the road, tragedy struck in the form of a speeding car that approached from the Dollygunj Junction side.
In a split second, the lady driver of the car lost control, and Mr. Mohan’s attempt to step back turned unfortunate. The car struck him with considerable force, throwing him approximately 10 meters away from the impact point. The car, too, collided with a road divider during the accident.
The unfortunate accident caused severe injuries to the car’s driver as well. A person present at the scene, who happened to be a police officer, immediately intervened and arranged for both the injured to be rushed to GB Pant Hospital. However, despite prompt medical attention, the doctors declared Mr. Mohan brought dead on arrival.
The driver of the car, identified as Mrs. Preeti is currently undergoing treatment at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, and his condition is reported to be critical.
Mr. Prakash Adhikari, Zilla Parishad Member of Guptapara, has demanded swift action from the authorities. He urged the immediate arrest of the car driver and emphasized the importance of providing appropriate compensation and expenses to support the victim’s family during this difficult time. “The victim was a very poor man, leaving behind his wife and two young children. It is crucial that the family’s needs are taken care of until the victim’s life insurance claim is processed,” Mr. Adhikari asserted.

Member of Parliament suggests construction of flyovers in Port Blair to reduce Traffic Congestion

August 2, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Aug 02: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, urging immediate action to address the worsening traffic conditions in Port Blair City by constructing flyovers.

In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament highlighted the daily struggle faced by residents due to multiple traffic jams on various city roads. He attributed the problem to the growing number of vehicles and the narrow roads, which were designed several decades ago. If left unattended, the situation is expected to worsen in the next 2 to 3 years due to the city’s rapid population growth, he added.

Recognizing the urgency of the matter, the Member of Parliament proposed three flyover projects that could significantly alleviate the traffic congestion in Port Blair City:

1) A flyover from DC Office to Atul Smriti Samity (Bengali Club) Junction, continuing to Phoenix Bay Powerhouse Junction.
2) Flyover connecting the DC Office to Atul Smriti Samity (Bengali Club) Junction to Goal Ghar Junction to Junglighat School Junction.
3) Flyover from DC Office to Fire Brigade to Netaji Stadium.

He emphasized that now is the right time to explore and implement these flyover projects.

The construction of these flyovers would not only improve the city’s infrastructure but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents and visitors. Additionally, it would contribute to the overall development and progress of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands while reducing the number of accidents on the city roads.
