Baratang, August 23: The Lorojig, Baratang area of NH4 faced considerable disruptions recently due to traffic complications arising from an overflow of the Lorojig Bridge following intense rainfall. The waterlogging on the bridge has caused a great deal of inconvenience to commuters in the area.
The Lorojig Bridge, with a history spanning over 25 years, was originally constructed by the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) and later entrusted to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) for maintenance. However, a persistent issue with the water drainage system has been observed, as local residents have been grappling with overflowing of the Nallah during rainy seasons for the past five years.
Mr. Alagerswamy, the Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang, highlighted that disruptions due to such incidents are not uncommon in regions prone to heavy rainfall and flooding. He noted that even a brief spell of rain inundated the highway stretch with rainwater. Despite the maintenance responsibilities being transferred to NHIDCL, inadequate maintenance has persisted over the past half-decade.
Local villagers have expressed their concern over the situation, urging NHIDCL to take immediate action to address the drainage problems and conduct thorough maintenance work. Should the issue persist, they are contemplating organizing a protest in response, Mr. Alagerswamy said.
