Member of Parliament demands to place a Floating Jetty or a Pontoon near Yeretta Jetty for regular use of Dinghies and Small Fiber Boats for Long Island

September 27, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Sept 27: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma today called on the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration and highlighted the issue regarding the recent closure of Yeretta Jetty in the Middle Andaman region due to safety concerns.

Expressing deep concern, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma emphasized the critical role played by Yeretta Jetty as a lifeline for the transportation needs of Long Island residents. The jetty facilitates the movement of the general public, cargo transportation, and the operation of small dinghies and fiber boats, all of which are essential for the local economy.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Yeretta Jetty, which is the closest to Long Island Jetty compared to Rangat Bay Jetty, the Member of Parliament highlighted about the decision to redirect ferry and other small boat services to Rangat Bay Jetty as a safety measure. “This redirection not only significantly increases travel time but also exposes Long Island residents to the risks associated with navigating open sea routes, particularly during emergencies when using dinghies or fiber boats,” he added.

In response to the pressing needs of Long Island residents, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma requested the intervention of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration. He requested the Chief Secretary to place a floating jetty or a Pontoon next to Yeretta Jetty as a minimum measure to ensure uninterrupted and secure transportation between Yeretta Jetty area and Long Island, especially during emergencies.

During the meeting the Chief Secretary assured the Member of Parliament to provide a floating jetty or place a pontoon near Yerretta Jetty at the earlies.

World Rabies Day is commemorated every year on September 28 – the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur – since 2007. World Rabies Day aims to raise awareness and advocate for rabies elimination globally.
The theme for this year is “Rabies; All for one, one health for all”. It is an event that aims to be inclusive, uniting people, organisations, and stakeholders across all sectors against rabies. This is taking one step further since last year’s campaign, which focused more on collaboration, equality and the strengthening of health systems. There is a need for inclusivity, togetherness and unity on a global level to overcome imbalanced health systems and to strive for achieving the global goal of zero human deaths from dog mediated rabies by 2030#ZeroBy30.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the very few regions in India which are still free from this disease. We can continue to maintain this impeccable performance in future through strict disease surveillance, regular Vaccination of dogs and cats against rabies and with the cooperation and contribution of all stakeholders-Pet Owners, Animal Societies, and the various Department of the Government like the Panchayats, the Municipal Council and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department of the UT Administration.
I extend my best wishes towards the endeavour.
