Member of Parliament demands construction of Karongnallah Dam

December 19, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Dec 19: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, has demanded construction of a dam over Karongnallah in the Billyground region.
In his letter addressed to the Lt Governor he mentioned that there has been a long-standing proposal for the construction of a dam over Karongnallah in the Billyground region.
He added that the PRI members of the area have reportedly moved this proposal multiple times, emphasizing its potential benefits for the people of the region.
The Member of Parliament said that he strongly believes that the construction of the Karongnallah Dam would be a vital development, particularly in addressing water scarcity issues faced by the people of nearby Panchayats, namely Nimbudera, Billyground, Swadesnagar, and Betapur. “The region encounters a severe water crisis during the summer, and the situation reached an alarming level in the previous summer,” he added
He pointed out that the Billiground and nearby areas are known for vegetable cultivation as well as plantation and availability of a good water source will ensure more production of vegetables and other products, which ultimately lead to more earning for farmers and availability of vegetables at Port Blair at an affordable rate.
Considering the pressing need for a sustainable water solution and the potential positive impact on the lives of the residents, the Member of Parliament requested the intervention of the Lt. Governor in this matter and expedite the decision-making process regarding the construction of the Karongnallah Dam.

TSG Bhasker demands for appointment of Dieticians in the Hospitals of Andaman & Nicobar Islands

December 19, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Dec 19: Highlighting the unavailability of Dieticians in the Hospitals of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Mr. TSG Bhasker, Chairman, Campaign Committee, ANTCC has written a letter to the Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration on Tuesday.
In his letter, Mr. Bhasker pointed out that at present there are three District Hospitals functioning in Andaman & Nicobar Islands comprising of G.B Pant Hospital, Dr. R.P Hospital, Mayabunder and BJR Hospital, Car Nicobar along with one Ayush Hospital.
”As per our information, there are only 2 dieticians available in G.B Pant Hospital which is not sufficient to cater to the needs of hundreds of patients admitted in different wards. The remaining hospitals do not have a single dietician. Unavailability of Dietician is one of the reasons why patients are not recovering soon”, said Mr. Bhasker.
He emphasized that Dieticians are essential members of the health care team. They are responsible in planning individual nutritional therapies to address specific health issues, such as unhealthy weight, diabetes or hypertension while also promoting public awareness for proper nutritional standards and habits. A dietician ascertains the disease of a patient, makes a nutritional assessment of his/her needs, discusses it with a doctor and family members, and then makes a diet plan for the patient.
He added “While Government and Private hospitals in mainland have adequate number of Dieticians in their Hospitals, we are far behind in recognizing the role of Dieticians so far in Andaman & Nicobar Islands”.
Hence, Mr. Bhasker requested the Chief Secretary to take necessary steps to increase the number of posts of Dieticians in G.B Pant Hospital and further appoint an adequate number of Dieticians in other Hospitals. He expressed hope that under the able leadership of the Chief Secretary, the health sector in A&N Islands will reach new heights.

TSG Bhasker writes to ChiefSecretary, highlights issues being faced by the tribals of Car Nicobar Island

December 19, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Dec 19: The ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman Shri. TSG Bhasker has brought the attention of the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration regarding the issues being faced by the tribal people of Car Nicobar Island through a letter submitted on Tuesday.
In the first point of his letter, Mr. Bhasker said that the tender for construction of sea wall near the Mus Jetty was floated long ago but the work has not been completed till now. The problem of soil erosion is also increasing day after day. It has come to notice that the draft around the Jetty has reduced significantly. Further, he said that the vessels which are coming to the Mus Jetty are unable to berth and un-birth because of the low draft.
Second point of the letter stated that the passenger facilities in the Mus Jetty such as passenger shed, sitting facility, toilet etc is in a very deplorable condition and needs to be improved immediately.
The third point of the letter described the bad condition of the roads in Car Nicobar. It was informed that the damage to roads has been caused because of the usage of heavy vehicles with huge loads going in the defense area. Mr. Bhasker suggested that an alternative land needs to be allotted somewhere close to the defense area so that a temporary Jetty can be built and contractors can unload their cargo from there. He said that the pantoons which are unloading at the Jetty are also causing hardship for the maneuvering of the passenger ships.
In the fourth point of the letter, Mr. Bhasker highlighted that there is an acute shortage of GTT teachers for subjects like Maths, Science, Social Science, English and Hindi in the Car Nicobar Island which is causing immense hardship to the students and also teachers who are posted there. He urged the Chief Secretary to devise ways and means to encourage the tribal population to come to school.
Further, in the fifth point of the letter, Mr. Bhasker exhorted that after the Tsunami in 2004, the government initiated a rehabilitation process and built many permanent shelters for the residents of Car Nicobar. During this period, septic tanks were built for disposal of solid wastes. He expressed sadness that these septic tanks have not been cleaned for several years due to which the septic tanks are overflowing, especially during the rainy season when the rain water enters the septic tanks. He said that this overflow of human waste can cause serious health issues among our tribal population.
Mr. Bhasker through the sixth point of his letter mentioned that the medical facilities in the District Hospital of Car Nicobar needs to be improved. The hospital is facing a shortage of nurses and ward boys. Also, the X-ray machine and Ultrasound machine do not have an operator.
Through the last point of his letter, Mr. Bhasker thanked the Chief Secretary for fast tracking the recruitment process in many departments of A&N Islands. He stated that however, due to the high cut off marks laid for passing the test, many posts are not being filled including the posts in the Police Force. Hence, he requested the Chief Secretary to kindly lower down the cut off marks so that many of our tribal children can get employment.
