Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Dec 22: Shortage of stone chips in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is causing a cascade of problems, affecting various aspects of the Islands’ development. Private construction projects are grappling with soaring stone chip prices, leading to delays in completing numerous houses and buildings. One of the severe consequences is the postponement of crucial repairs to village roads, exemplified by the deteriorating conditions of Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep.
The road connecting Radha Nagar Beach and Kala Pathar Beaches on Swaraj Dweep have succumbed to potholes, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially at night. Despite the completion of the tendering process, local PRI members of Swaraj Dweep reveal that the road repair is paralyzed due to an acute shortage of stone chips.
Similarly, Shaheed Dweep is grappling with deplorable road conditions, marked by missing upper layers and numerous potholes. The scarcity of stone chips is thwarting essential repair work, causing immense suffering for the island’s residents.
Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, being prominent tourist destinations, witness thousands of national and international visitors. Unfortunately, the deplorable state of roads is leaving a bitter impression on tourists, tarnishing the image of Andaman Tourism.
It is necessary for the administration to address this crisis immediately, taking concrete measures to facilitate the tendering process for road repairs and ensuring an adequate supply of stone chips. The roads of Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, integral to the tourism appeal of Andaman and Nicobar, demand immediate attention and restoration.
