Diglipur, April 10: The long cherished Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Diglipur was supposed to cater to a population of several thousand living in Diglipur Tehsil; but the new building of the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) is awaiting completion for the last couple years, even as the CHC, Diglipur is insufficient to handle the influx of patients, lack of space and is plagued by shortage of Staff Nurses and other staff.
According to information, the construction of the new building of the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) faced halts several times in the past owing to various reasons best known to the Administration. However, according to officials with knowledge of the details, now, just when residents of Diglipur were expecting the new building to get operational, the construction work was caught in a new quagmire. The new building of the Sub-District Hospital is reportedly yet to get clearance from the Fire Department. As per the fire specifications/compliance, the new building of the Sub-District Hospital was reportedly to meet the requirement of the installation of high voltage pump (automatic type) in the new building of the SDH.
However, when Andaman Sheekha Daily contacted the concerned officials of CD, APWD, Diglipur, the new building of the Sub-District Hospital constructing agency, said that the works related to installation of high voltage pump (automatic type) in new building of the SDH is reportedly in progress and the works are reportedly at the final/finishing stage, and once these works accomplished, the Dept. will be able to handover the building to DHS. The ASD further posed questions to the higher authority of the Health Service Department on the status of SDH and its probable time of operation, the top Official in response said that Sub-District Hospital, Diglipur, with a specified number of specialist doctors will reportedly be operational within a couple of months, and the people of Diglipur will be largely benefitted with its services, he further assured.

POCSO Conviction in Kalighat: Accused Sentenced to 3 Years, A&N Police Reaffirm Zero Tolerance

On 09/04/2025, in a judgment, the Special Judge (POCSO) Mr. Subhajit Basu has sentenced the accused Suren Mondal in a POCSO case vide Crime No. 44/2024 of PS Kalighat to 03 years of Imprisonment along with a fine of RS.10,000/-.
This significant achievement was the result of the relentless pursuit of justice and meticulous investigation by SI Kannagi, the Investigation Officer, and SI Ashok Kumar Baghel, SHO, PS Kalighat. Their dedication, professionalism, and tireless efforts played a crucial role in securing justice for the victim and ensuring that the accused was held accountable for his crimes.
The crime involved the victim girl, a school student who was abused by the accused on the way while she was returning from her friend’s house. On 25/08/2024, upon receiving the victim’s complaint, a case was registered at PS Kalighat U/s 7/8 of POCSO Act,2012 r.w.s 75(1)(i)/126(2) BNS 2023, spearheading swift legal action against the accused.
This judgement serves as a strong and unequivocal warning that crimes against children will be met with the severest punishments under the law. The A&N Police upholds a zero-tolerance policy against such heinous offenses and remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of society’s most vulnerable members.

Govt. Offices to Remain Closed on April 14 for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Birthday
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr.10:The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has declared that all Government Offices in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands including Industrial Establishments will remain closed on Monday the 14th April, 2025 on account of birthday of Dr. B R Ambedkar in accordance with the instructions contained in the Government of India Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Personnel and Training Office Memorandum Number 12/4/2020-JCA2 dated 27th March 2025.
Traffic Diversion Announced For Panguni Uttaram Festival At Murugan Temple On April 11
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 10:In view of the upcoming Panguni Uttaram festival to be celebrated at Lord Subramaniaswamy Devasthanam (Murugan Temple), RGT Road, Sri Vijiyapuram, the District Magistrate of South Andaman has issued a traffic diversion order to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety.
As per the official notification, all vehicular traffic will be suspended from 7:00 AM onwards on April 11, 2025, along the stretch between Murugan Temple and Siddique Junction in both directions.
Additionally, no vehicles will be permitted to approach Murugan Temple from RGT Road and APWD Junction from 7:00 AM.
Alternate Routes Announced:
• Vehicles heading towards Aberdeen Bazar from Siddique Junction after 7:00 AM must take the following route:
Siddique Junction → Shadipur → Machi Line → RK Mission → Girls School Junction → Aberdeen Bazar.
• Vehicles intending to reach Siddique Junction via Murugan Temple must follow:
Murugan Temple → RGT Road → Machi Line → Shadipur → Siddique Junction.
Authorities have urged the public to cooperate and follow the traffic guidelines during the festival period for their convenience and safety.
The traffic changes have been enforced under the powers conferred by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Administration’s Notification dated March 10, 2008.
For further updates, citizens are advised to stay tuned to local announcements and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed in the area.
Free Artificial Limb Camp Begins at CRC, Brookshabad: Scores of beneficiaries from four corners of the Islands gathered to avail Prosthetic (Artificial Limb) & Orthotic (Calipers)
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 10: The Composite Regional Centre (CRC), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in association with the Rotary Club, Sri Vijaya Puram, and Mahaveer Seva Sadan, begins a 05-days Free Prosthetic & Orthotic Camp at the CRC premises in Brookshabad, from 10th April to 14th April 2025.
As part of its ongoing mission to empower persons with disabilities, the CRC, A&N Islands, is under the administrative control of the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) an institution established under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and with an unwavering support from the A & N Administration continues to provide holistic services including rehabilitation, counseling, therapeutic interventions, skill development, and assistive device support. The Centre also conducts various training programs, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building initiatives for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.
The camp began with the gracious presence of Smti. Sumitha Mol.S, Director, CRC, A & N Islands, Smti. Raj Mahajan, Founding Member, Mahaveer Seva Sadan, Shri Sagar Khurrana, President, Rotary Club; Shri Dhinakaran Guruswamy, Secretary, Rotary Club; and Shri Diwakar, Member, Rotary Club and with other members of the Rotary Club made it ensure the camp’s success. This included thorough publicity of the event to reach beneficiaries in the most remote areas, mobilizing participants, offering shelter and transportation services, and, most importantly, hosting a press conference to raise awareness of this noble cause.
The five-day camp is a significant step in fulfilling CRC’s vision of inclusivity and mobility for all. A team of expert technicians from Kolkata has arrived to render their professional services during the camp, ensuring high-quality care and personalized fitting of artificial limbs and calipers. The team led by Shri Gautam Roy, Chief Prosthetic & Orthotic (P & O), Mahaveer Seva Sadan, Kolkata with his team of skillful hands and compassionate service provided the professional help to around 50 beneficiaries from various walks of life from A & N Islands received services like upper limb like arms and hands, lower limbs like legs, feet or toes, ankle and foot (used for foot drop, cerebral palsy, stroke etc.), Knee-ankle foot used for polio, muscular dystrophy etc. The services are conveniently provided at the doorstep of our islands. Interestingly, the process begins with assessing the required limbs, followed by taking measurements, and then preparing them through casting. The prostheses will be delivered during the valedictory function on 14th April 2025.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for beneficiaries by enhancing their independence and mobility, reaffirming the commitment of all associate organizations to social service and community welfare of these Islands.

Andaman Nicobar Book Fair Concludes with Emphasis on Cultivating Reading Habits
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr.10:The grand ten-day ‘Andaman Nicobar Book Fair’, organised by the Art & Culture Department, A&N Administration, in association with the National Book Trust (NBT), at the sprawling ITF Ground at Sri Vijaya Puram concluded today. The Fair was conducted with an aim to foster a love for reading and promote literary culture amongst the people, especially students and youth of these Islands. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, was the chief guest of the valedictory function.
In his address, the Chief Secretary wholeheartedly thanked the National Book Trust for associating with A&N Administration for the successful conduct of the ‘Book Fair’ for the benefit of the Islanders, especially the children and youth. He also thanked the publishers for visiting these Islands and setting up their book stalls, which he said, reflect their love & affection towards A&N Islands and its people.
The Chief Secretary said, it is our responsibility to develop reading habits among children, students & youth. Pointing out that there are good numbers of Libraries including school library in all the Islands, the Chief Secretary underlined the need for cultivating reading culture and reading habits among all age groups in A&N Islands.
The Chief Secretary also felicitated the NBT Officials, Resource Persons and artistes for their contribution in making this Book Fair a meaningful one.
Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others present on the occasion, the Secretary, Art & Culture, Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, said that the Fair was organised under the guidance of the Chief Secretary and was supported by the National Book Trust of India. She further said that educative session by the Resource Persons from Islands, Children’s Corner by NBT and VR Show by IP&T Department were enjoyed by the school children & visitors during the ‘Book Fair’.
Proposing the vote of thanks, the Director, Art & Culture, Smt. Priyanka Kumari, thanked all for their support especially the NBT for the smooth conduct of the Book Fair. The Book Fair featured 31 stalls displaying around 30,000 books of various genres and authors from different publishers from mainland India and provided an excellent opportunity for people to have a glimpse of wide variety of books and they were able to purchase them directly from the publishers.
Football Tournament-2025 to Kick Off on April 15; Opening Ceremony at 5 PM
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr.10:The Sports Department Football Tournament-2025 will commence from 15th April, 2025. All the matches will be played as per the fixture and all team Managers have been informed to be present on the field according to the matches schedule. The opening ceremony of the tournament will be held on 15th April, 2025 at 5 pm. It is mandatory for all registered teams to be present during the opening ceremony with proper team jersey.

Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 10: Shri Hanuman Jayanti will be celebrated at Chinmaya Mission, Sri Vijaya Puram on Saturday 12th April 2025 from 9 am to noon 12 pm. The programme will start at 9 am with Sunderkand path followed by Abhishekam and archana at 10.30 am. Power Suspension on April 12 in Garacharma-Teylerabad Area for HT Line Work
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr.10: The general public/consumers and Government Departments have been informed that the power supply will remain suspended on 12/04/2025 from 8 am to 2 pm in connection with HT lines work near Garacharma and Teylerabad Junction area. The areas to be affected are Tiger Feeder: Teylerabad, Sippighat, Bimblitan, Chouldhari, Namunaghar Junction to Tirur. Outer Feeder: Wandoor, Temple Myo, Manglutan, Guptapara, Nayasahar, Dhanikhari.
The above works will be carried out subject to weather condition and if the work completes earlier the feeder will be charged accordingly.
