Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 24: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a victory in local governance with the election of Mr. Sahul Hameed as the Chairperson of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council. Mr. Hameed secured the post with a clear majority, winning 15 votes to 9.
Election to the Office of the Chairperson, Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council for the fourth year term of tenure (2022-2027) was held on 24/04/2025 at 11.00 AM in the Conference Hall of Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Arjun Sharma, IAS. After the conduct of proceedings Mr. S. Shahul Hameed, Councillor Ward No.1 was declared as Chairperson, SVPMC for a period of one year for the fourth year term under the provisions of sub section (1) of section 197 of the Andaman and Nicobar (Municipal) Regulation, 1994 read with sub section (1) of section 14 of the said Regulation.
Oath of the elected Chairperson for the fourth year term of Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council commencing from 26/04/2025 will be administered by the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman on 25/04/2025 at 1600 hrs in the Conference Hall of Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council.

Minor Girl Rescued from West Bengal by PS Ograbraj in Coordinated Police Operation
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 24: In a commendable display of swift action and inter-state coordination, a 13-year-old minor girl, residing under PS Ograbraj jurisdiction was successfully rescued from West Bengal by the Police Station Ograbraj with the assistance of the local police of West Bengal within few hours of reporting.
On 20th April, 2025, the girl was reported missing, following which a kidnapping case has been registered at PS Ograbraj. Upon investigation and analysis of technical evidence, her location was traced to Gopalnagar, West Bengal. Immediate official communication was established with the In-charge, PS Gopalnagar, seeking urgent action. On 21st April,2025, the minor girl was rescued by the Gopalnagar Police and produced her before Child Welfare Committee (CWC) from there to Shelter Home for protection.
Subsequently, on 22nd April, 2025, a team from PS Ograbraj, consisting of SI Agnes Bartholoma and HC/Benjamin Toppo were deputed to West Bengal to facilitate the repatriation of the rescued girl. The minor was successfully brought back to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 24th April, 2025 and produced before Child Welfare Committee, Sri Vijaya Puram.
This entire rescue and repatriation operation was carried out under the leadership of SI Devanand Pathak, SHO PS Ograbraj, under the command of Shri Brij Mohan Meena, DANIPS, SDPO Bambooflat and the overall supervision of Shri Manoj Kumar Meena, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District.

Police Crack Kishor Heera Murder Case of Swaraj Dweep in Just 10 Hours; Childhood Friend Confesses to Crime
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 24: In a swift breakthrough, the Andaman & Nicobar Police successfully solved the gruesome murder case of Mr. Kishor Heera within 10 hours of the discovery of his headless body in Krishna Nagar village of Swaraj Dweep on April 22.
The chilling incident came to light early in the morning when local villagers, along with the Pradhan of Shyam Nagar, discovered the headless body near the forested edge of the Krishna Nagar area. Mr. Heera had been missing since April 21 2025. The police were immediately informed, and preliminary investigations identified the victim as Mr. Kishor Heera, a resident of the village, who originally hailed from 24 Paragana District of West Bengal.
According to officials, crucial leads came from a PRI member and local residents who recalled seeing Kishor last with his childhood friend, Mr. Sanjeevan Roy—a native of 24 Paragana, who had recently arrived in Swaraj Dweep. CCTV footage near a local shop, also confirmed the victim heading towards the jungle area and not returning.
Upon interrogation, Mr. Sanjeevan Roy reportedly confessed to the murder. As per sources, the motive behind the crime was linked to an extramarital affair. The accused had been involved in a relationship with Mr. Heera’s wife, who had recently come to the island from the mainland. This entangled relationship led to a deadly confrontation that ended with the brutal murder.
Sources have credited the villagers and the local leadership for their vital cooperation. It was the alertness and involvement of Krishna Nagar villagers and the Pradhan of Shyam Nagar that enabled such a quick resolution, it is learnt.
The accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody, while further investigation is underway.

Swachh Bharat Mission Ambassador Naresh Chander Lal Visits Carmel Senior Secondary School
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 24: To Check cleanliness and sanitation under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Mr. Naresh Chander Lal Padmashri Awardee and Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission Andaman & Nicobar Islands, today visited the Carmel Senior Secondary School and interacted with the students and teachers to maintain cleanliness at their school premises as well as to their respective society .

District-Level GST Filing Workshop Held for Gram Panchayat Staff
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 24: As part of the capacity building initiatives under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), a District Level Training Workshop on ‘GST Filing in Gram Panchayats’ was organized today at the SPRC Training Hall, Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs. The workshop was designed to empower Panchayat Secretaries and Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) with essential knowledge and practical skills related to Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance at the Panchayat level.
The inaugural address was delivered by Shri Bijoy Kumar Das, State Nodal Officer (RGSA), who highlighted the significance of GST compliance for enhancing transparency and financial discipline in local self-governance. A comprehensive overview session on GST filing was led by Shri Dipankar Bera, Superintendent, CGST & CX, A & N Division. This was followed by an in-depth technical session on ‘GST Filing in Gram Panchayats’ conducted by Shri Amit Parashar, Inspector, CGST & CX, A & N Division.
Participants actively engaged in a doubt-clearing session, where practical challenges and queries were addressed by both resource persons. The PMU Team facilitated a post-lunch discussion and feedback session, gathering valuable insights from the field functionaries.
Earlier, the training began with the registration of participants, followed by a welcome address by Ms. K.A. Prameela, Assistant Director (RD/Panch). The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Thiru Murugan, Panchayat Secretary, Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons and acknowledged the enthusiastic participation of the attendees.
The workshop conducted under the RGSA scheme, reflects the Directorate’s ongoing commitment to building strong and capable Panchayati Raj Institutions through targeted training, handholding support, and knowledge dissemination.
Empowering Communities: Awareness Program on “The Ill Effects of Alcohol and Drug Abuse” at Sippighat, SA
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 24: As part of the on-going Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, community-based Awareness Programmes on Drug Abuse and Prevention were successfully conducted at Collinpur and Tushnabad Gram Panchayats. These initiatives aimed to educate the public on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse while promoting early intervention, community vigilance, and collective responsibility to build a drug-free society. The programmes were organized by the Directorate of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Police (Anti-Narcotics), IRCA (South Andaman), and the Health Department. The programmes saw active participation from students of Classes 7 to 12, Anganwadi workers, Mukhya Sevika, PRI members, and the Pradhans and Up-Pradhans of the respective Panchayats. Local residents also attended in large numbers, showing strong community support. The sessions featured keynote lectures by Ms. Asrita Falia, along with expert talks from Dr. M.K. Mahato, (IRCA), Mr. Rathin Mallick, Psychologist cum Counsellor (NTCP/ DHS), and Mr. Sanjay Yadav, ASI (Anti-Narcotics – Police Department).
Discussions focused on the consequences of alcohol and substance abuse, how to identify early signs and take precautions, and real-life scenarios illustrating the impact of substance use. Speakers also highlighted strategies for raising awareness within communities, how to access de-addiction centers and available support systems, and the procedures for reporting drug-related activities. Important helpline numbers such as 112 for emergency assistance were shared with attendees. The programmes served as a meaningful platform for engagement and sensitization, reinforcing the importance of awareness, timely support, and a united community effort in combating drug abuse and fostering a healthier, safer society.
Public Alert: Firing Practice Scheduled at NSCB Dweep from April 25 to 30
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 24:Firing Practice will be carried out at NSCB Dweep scheduled on Apr. 25 from 1530 hrs to 1800hrs & 2000 hrs to 2200 hrs, and on Apr. 29 from 1530 hrs to 1900 hrs and Apr. 29 to 30 from 2100 hrs to 0400 hrs.
All concerned have been warned to keep themselves and their vehicle/livestock away from the firing range during the mentioned dates and times.
Science Centre to Host Hands-On Holiday Camp for Young Innovators
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 24:The Science Centre, located at Goodwill Estate, Corbyn’s Cove Road, Sri Vijaya Puram is organizing “Holiday Camp” for the benefit of the students studying in Class VI to VIII w.e.f May 2 to 30, 2025. The training shall be given in the following trades/disciplines: – Aero Modeling, Fun Chemistry, Creative Science, Robotronics, Fun Biology, Rocket Modeling, 3D Modeling & Drone Making. The camp is ear marked weekly for two subjects during which the subject will be dealt in details with hands on experiments.
Registration of students shall commence from April 25 & shall continue till April 27, 2025 from 10.30 am to 5 pm by paying a registration fee of Rs. 500/- per trade alongwith a xerox copy of Aadhaar Card.
