Police cautions against dangerous, drunken driving on new year day

December 29, 2011 by sanjib 1 Comment

Port Blair, Dec. 29: The arrival of New Year is celebrated in these Islands with great enthusiasm by the public. A large number of four wheeler and two wheeler riders come-out on roads and visit various places including hotels and Corbyn’s Cove beach etc. & it has often been noticed that the drivers/riders celebrate the occasion by indulging in rash driving and dangerous driving after consuming liquor, as such chances of accidents multiply. Therefore, it  has been decided to launch special joint operation by the Traffic and local police against dangerous driving, drunken driving, driving without Helmet, without number plate, etc. on the intervening night of 31st December, 2011 and 1st January, 2012.  Parents of teen agers are advised not to allow their children to drive motor cycles and other vehicles without valid licence and without helmet in case of two wheelers. Anyone found driving under intoxication, without helmet or without valid licence will have to face stern action under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 apart from a recommendation to the Licensing Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands for suspension of the driving licence.

All vehicle users are hereby cautioned to refrain from indulging in any act, including harassment to ladies, which is punishable under the law.

It may be mentioned here that during the last New Year, the number of accused persons booked for rash, negligent, drunken driving and violation of other Motor vehicles rules for intoxication, causing obstruction or nuisance to the general public ran into hundreds. Also, we should remember that this is a special evening and not an excuse to drink alcohol, dance on the roads, hold up traffic and play offensive and inappropriate music.

General public through this note is requested to adhere to Traffic Rules to help us to organize the New Year celebrations peacefully and without any untoward incident.
