Residents and Tourists suffer as ATM of Canara Bank, Shaheed Dweep remains Out of Service for 25 Days

April 3, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

John Wilbert & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Apr 03: Shaheed Dweep is facing a major problem due to the non-functional ATM services of Canara Bank. The ATM installed at the Neil Kendra branch of the bank has been out of service for the last 25 days, causing inconvenience to the general public as well as tourists visiting the Island.
According to sources, many people have visited the ATM during this period but returned without any transaction due to the machine showing an “out of link” error message. The situation has become worse for tourists who cannot withdraw any money for their daily needs or make online transactions due to poor internet connection.
The Cooperative Bank is the only other bank that offers ATM services in the area, but its machine has also suffered from internet connection problems. The local residents are somehow managing by visiting bank branches, but the tourists are facing a hard time due to the non-operational ATM services and poor internet connection.
Mr. Sukumar Das, an Ex Zilla Parishad member of Shaheed Dweep, said that they have reported the issue to the bank officials several times but the problem has persisted for more than 25 days. He also urged Canara Bank and BSNL to resolve the issue as soon as possible, as it is causing a bad image about the island’s tourism.
Mr. Kajol Das, the Mondal President of BJP in Shaheed Dweep, said that the Canara Bank ATM has been out of service for more than 20 days, and only the Cooperative Bank ATM is working. However, it has also faced issues due to link problems. He added that the local residents can manage without the ATM services for a while, but the tourists are facing a lot of difficulties during the evening hours when the bank branches are closed.
Andaman Sheekha contacted the senior manager of Canara Bank Main Branch, who said that the matter has been taken up by the concerned branch. Some technical faults have been identified in the parts, and they have tried to repair them, but failed. The spare parts are not available in the local market, so they have ordered them from the mainland, and are waiting for their arrival. Once the spare parts reach Andaman, they will replace them, and the ATM will be started soon.

Raising DRM issue in Parliament, Member of Parliament demands grant of enhanced wage of 1/30th Pay at minimum of relevant basic pay plus DA to all DRMs in ANI

April 3, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Apr 03: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma today raised the issue of granting enhanced wage of 1/30th Pay at minimum of relevant basic pay plus Dearness Allowance to 2000 odd long serving DRMs of APWD and all the DRMs working in various departments of A&N Administration, in Parliament.

He informed the Parliament that the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) employs regular staff, along with casual workers and persons on daily wages known as Daily Rated Mazdoor or DRM’s. The APWD also undertakes the task of providing the islanders with drinking water, roads, and bridges.

The Member of Parliament informed the Parliament that the DRMs, however, are paid very less for which they approached the Calcutta High Court which had ordered that a daily-rated casual worker engaged by the Andaman and Nicobar administration in any of its department is entitled to 1/30th of the pay at the minimum of the relevant pay scale plus dearness allowance for work of eight hours a day, as specified by the Government of India.

He added that there are long standing demands to implement this judgment which has been upheld by the Division Bench of Calcutta High Court in December 2022.

In this regard the Member of Parliament requested the Government to grant enhanced wage of 1/30th Pay at minimum of relevant basic pay plus Dearness Allowance to 2000 odd long serving DRMs of APWD and all the DRMs working in various departments of A&N Administration w.e.f. 01.09.2017 who were left out for want of vacant sanctioned posts.

In addition to this, he requested the Government to regularize the services of all the DRMs.

ANTCC Holds Press Meet On Rahul Gandhi’s Disqualification Issue

April 3, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Apr 03: The Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC) on Sunday launched its ‘Jai Bharat Satyagraha’ protest programme by organizing a Press Conference at Gandhi Bhawan, Port Blair highlighting the motive behind preplan conviction and subsequent disqualification of Rahul Gandhi.
In the press conference, ANTCC President Mr. Rangalal Halder informed the media that the protest programme will start from April 16th and various forms of protest, including a series of public meetings, nukkad-natak campaign, post card campaign and social media campaign will be organized at State, District and Block levels across the Islands.
“During the protests, the ANTCC will highlight the blatant looting of people’s money by the Modi Government by conspiring with some of his close associates like Gautam Adani”, he said.
ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman Mr. TSG Bhasker said that Rahul Gandhi was targeted because he asked the Prime Minister about the scam of Adani group and demanded a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) on the matter.
“The BJP and Narendra Modi are trying to shut the mouth of Rahul Gandhi so that he stops exposing the scam. The recent conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case and disqualification was a pre-plan to gag Rahul Gandhi”, he said.
ANTCC Chief Spokesperson Mr. K. Ganeshan and ANTCC Spokesperson Mr. Tamil Selvan jointly said that the Congress Party would do everything to save the democracy and would stand firm for justice to Rahul Gandhi.
“The government at the Centre is blatantly misusing Central agencies to suppress the voice of opposition parties. Now Rahul Gandhi is being targeted because he has raised serious questions on democracy and capitalists”, they alleged.
