APWD Department assures to Complete Road Works of Shaheed Dweep Before Monsoon

April 10, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

John Wilbert & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Apr 10: The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has assured the residents and tourists of Shaheed Dweep area of South Andaman that road repairs will be completed before the monsoon. Earlier, residents and tourist vehicle riders of the area complained about the poor condition of the road stretch between Shaheed Dweep Jetty to Sitapur, Neil Kendra to Laxmanpur Bridge, and Shaheed Dweep Bazar to Coral Point Village road. The dilapidated condition of this road has caused severe inconvenience to road users.
In October 2022, the Neil Islands Tourist Vehicle Association of Shaheed Dweep had stopped its services to Natural Bridge due to the poor condition of the road. After the APWD carried out road repairing work from Neil Kendra to Coral Point, some tourist vehicles resumed their services after a month. However, the condition of the road deteriorated once again, causing trouble to both visitors and locals.
Mr. Sukumar, Ex Zilla Parishad member of Shaheed Dweep, expressed his concern about the bad road condition and requested the administration and APWD department to find a permanent solution. Shaheed Dweep Panchayat and tourism association has also raised the matter with the administration, but little effort was made to repair the road.
However, the APWD officer, who does not want to be named, has told Andaman Sheekha Daily that the department has already prepared an estimate, and the tender has been called. A company has been awarded the work, and the material is being shifted. The work will start immediately, and the department has been instructed to complete the work before monsoon.
The assurance from the APWD department has brought some relief to the residents and tourists of Shaheed Dweep. Now residents of Shaheed Dweep hope that the road repairs will be completed before the monsoon, making travel safer and more convenient.

Member of Parliament requests PM to declare Car Nicobar Airfield as an alternative airport to Port Blair Airport

April 10, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Apr 10: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Prime Minister of India to declare the Car Nicobar Defence Airfield as an alternative airport to the Port Blair Airport.

“Alternate Airports” are airports that are marked along an aircraft’s flight plan that can safely accommodate the landing of the aircraft should the aircraft experience an emergency or if the landing at the intended airport becomes inadvisable.

In his letter he mentioned that this would greatly benefit the residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as tourists visiting the region.

According to the Member of Parliament, currently, the only alternative airport to Port Blair is located in foreign countries, which greatly increases the cost of airfare for those travelling to and from the Islands. This makes it difficult for many residents to afford to travel, and also makes the islands less accessible to tourists.

He pointed out that the Car Nicobar Defence Airfield, however, is located much closer to the islands and has the necessary infrastructure to support commercial flights. By making this airfield an alternative airport, the cost of airfare would significantly decrease, making it more affordable for residents to travel and for tourists to visit the islands.

He added that he strongly believes that this change would greatly benefit the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and would also make these Islands more accessible to Tourists, which will in-turn help Andaman’s Tourism Industry as well as local economy.
