Busy Dairy Farm-Hayat Singh Road Partially Closed for Drain Construction
John Wilbert & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Apr 25: One of the busiest stretches of road in Port Blair city, the Dairy Farm-Hayat Singh road, has been partially closed since this morning. The closure is expected to last for a few days, which will surely cause inconvenience to commuters.
The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has resumed construction work to complete the remaining portions of the Airport drains at Dairy Farm Junction. These works were put on hold after the rains began last year, and the APWD has now restarted construction work to complete the stretch between VIP road and Dairy Farm Junction in a few weeks.
However, when the road was suddenly closed on one side from Dairy Farm to VIP road, traffic was diverted through the old route, raising questions from the public. Citizens have expressed serious doubts over the delayed work, looking at the slow pace of construction.
The Traffic Police are doing a tremendous job in diverting traffic and ensuring that there is no traffic jam on the diverted road. But it seems practically impossible to manage such huge traffic from Vijay Baugh road. It is crucial that the work is completed on time.
Sources in the APWD department said that some portions of the drain line network and culvert were not connected earlier in 2021.
Now as a precautionary measure to prevent landslides, the road has been closed on one side. The APWD staff is working on a war footing to complete the construction within a week before the onset of the rainy season. If the construction is not completed on time, the airport area could suffer from waterlogging.
The partial closure of the Dairy Farm-Hayat Singh road has caused inconvenience to commuters, and they are hoping that the work will be completed on time. It is essential for the authorities to ensure that the work is completed on time to avoid further traffic disruptions and inconvenience to the public.
