Cyclonic Weather Causes Havoc in various parts of A & N Islands: Trees Uprooted, Vehicles Damaged, and Power Cuts Reported

September 4, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

John Wilbert & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Sept 04: Cyclonic conditions wreaked havoc in several parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands today as relentless winds uprooted numerous trees, causing significant damage to electricity lines and resulting in intermittent power outages in the Port Blair vicinity.
The powerful gusts brought down not just whole trees but also dangerous branches. Reports flooded in about varying degrees of damages – from minor scratches on property to more significant incidents, such as vehicles being crushed under falling trees, resulting in traffic disruptions.
In a particularly concerning episode, today afternoon, around 01:00 PM, a towering, aged tree collapsed onto six parked cars at the Old Ayush Hospital parking lot in Atlanta Point. Four of these vehicles sustained substantial damages. Tragically, at the time of the incident, four individuals were inside the parked cars. Two of them sustained minor injuries, while one person suffered a shoulder fracture. Quick-thinking fellow drivers who were present at the scene promptly evacuated the injured and ensured they were rushed to GB Pant Hospital for medical attention.
Furthermore, today, around 02:30 PM, another colossal tree, accompanied by an electric pole, toppled over the Chidiyatapu area road. This incident not only caused a traffic halt for nearly three hours but also led to prolonged power outages in the entire Chidiyatapu region throughout the evening. Meanwhile, residents of Port Blair were particularly inconvenienced by unexpected power disruptions across various parts of the city.

Major Tree Fall Disrupts Traffic on Andaman Trunk Road

September 4, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

John Wilbert & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, September 04: Traffic on the NH4 (Andaman Trunk Road) was brought to a standstill for close to four hours today after a massive tree collapsed on the roadway, approximately 13 km inside the Middle Strait Jarawa area, around 03:00 pm.
Police, Forest Department personnel, and AAJVS (Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti) teams promptly responded to the incident, launching a concerted effort to clear the obstruction.

Adding to the severity of the situation, a convoy heading from Port Blair to Baratang, comprising over 50 vehicles, found itself stranded within the Jarawa territory due to the blockade. Assisted by the police and AAJVS staff, efforts were made to expedite the removal of the fallen tree. However, given the tree’s substantial size, the operation took several hours, leaving vehicles and passengers in a prolonged wait.
Furthermore, the 03:00 pm convoy travelling from Baratang to Port Blair experienced delays exceeding two hours due to the incident.
By around 07:00 pm, the clearance work was nearing completion, and by 07:30 pm, the Port Blair to Baratang vehicles finally exited the affected Jarawa area of Middle Strait.
The rapid response of the authorities minimized the delay, ensuring the safety and smooth passage for all travelers on the Andaman Trunk Road.

Port Blair, Sept 04: To express gratitude to visiting tourists and to show that Andaman and Nicobar Islands value and cherish tourists, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has proposed for Free Entry in all Tourist places for tourists and Islanders on World Tourism Day, 27th September 2023.

In light of the immense contributions of the tourism industry and to express gratitude to the myriad of tourists who choose our Islands as their travel destination, the Member of Parliament suggested that on the occasion of World Tourism Day, Andaman and Nicobar Administration should declare entry to all tourist attractions viz the Cellular Jail, Light and Sound show, Fisheries Museum, Samudrika, Anthropological Museum, Chatham Museum, entry to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island , entirely free of cost for all visitors, including tourists and Islanders, on 27th September 2023.

He added that such a gesture would send a resonating message across the nation and world that Andaman and Nicobar Islands value and cherish tourists. “By offering this token of appreciation, we would be setting a precedent of hospitality and gratitude, reinforcing the islands as a preferred destination for travellers,” he added.

The Member of Parliament also mentioned that many Islanders have not visited all tourist places of these Islands, hence this World Tourism Day will be a great opportunity for them to visit these Tourist Spots.

My dear Educators of Andaman and Nicobar Islands,

On the special occasion of Teacher’s Day, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude and admiration to all of you who have dedicated your lives to shaping the minds and futures of our young Islanders. Your role is pivotal in weaving the fabric of our society and preserving the unique cultural heritage of these Islands.

Our Islands, though distant from the mainland, have never lagged behind in the quest for knowledge and enlightenment, and it is solely because of the tireless efforts and commitment of teachers like you. Each day, you not only teach academic subjects but also instill values, culture, and love for our pristine environment.

The challenges of teaching in our Islands are unique due to geographical location, but so is the spirit of our Teachers. Your resilience in overcoming these challenges is commendable. Andaman Association of Tour Operators Appeals for Compensation to Vehicle Owners Affected by Natural Calamity

September 4, 2023 by sanjib Leave a Comment

Port Blair, Sept 04: In the wake of a recent unfortunate incident at the Atlanta Point parking area in Port Blair, the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO) has submitted an earnest appeal to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for compensation to the vehicle owners affected by the natural calamity.
The incident, which occurred due to extreme winds and adverse weather conditions, witnessed a colossal tree uprooted, resulting in substantial damage to approximately six to seven vehicles and, regrettably, causing injuries to one individual.
What adds to the gravity of the situation is that many of these vehicles, integral to the tourism industry in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have been acquired by the region’s young entrepreneurs. These purchases often involve borrowed capital from banks, translating into hefty monthly EMIs. Such unforeseen events, therefore, not only bring distress but also pose a significant threat to the employment and financial stability of these aspiring business owners.
Understanding the unpredictability of natural calamities and their potential to disrupt lives and livelihoods, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has provisions for compensation in such scenarios.
Mr. M Vinod, President of the Andaman Association of Tour Operators, emphasized the importance of supporting these affected vehicle owners. “These young entrepreneurs have invested their aspirations and resources into the tourism industry, which is vital to our islands. We believe that offering them compensation is not just a financial relief but also a means to safeguard their employment and ensure they can continue contributing to our region’s economy,” he stated.
The Andaman Association of Tour Operators requested the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to review the incident and consider providing appropriate compensation to the vehicle owners affected. “Such support would prove invaluable in helping those who have seen their vehicles damaged and whose livelihoods now hang in the balance due to this unexpected natural calamity,” he said.
